Editor's Take:
Samuel Beckett changed modern theatre with a play in which, famously, nothing happens twice. Born in Dublin, he moved to Paris and worked as an assistant to James Joyce. During the war he served in the French Resistance. He wrote many of his best works in French and translated them himself. Waiting for Godot, about two men waiting for someone who never comes, premiered in 1953. His later plays grew ever more stark and strange. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1969.
