Editor's Take:
Rushdie stands as one of postcolonial literature's defining voices, weaving Eastern and Western traditions through magical realist narratives. His breakthrough came with a novel about India's independence that earned not just a Booker but retrospective recognition as the prize's finest achievement. Yet his literary legacy became inseparable from political violence when religious conservatives deemed his fourth novel blasphemous. The resulting fatwa forced him into hiding for years and sparked global debates about artistic freedom. His survival of a near-fatal stabbing decades later proved that the threat never truly ended. Despite this, he continued teaching, writing, and advocating for creative liberty.
