Editor's Take:
Romain Rolland was a French writer who believed art could unite humanity. His ten-volume novel Jean-Christophe follows a German musician inspired partly by Beethoven. He wrote admiring biographies of Beethoven, Michelangelo and Tolstoy. During the First World War he lived in Switzerland and called for peace in his essay Above the Battle. Many in France saw this as betrayal. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1915. He later wrote about Gandhi and corresponded with Freud.
