Editor's Take:

Ringo Starr is the drummer who kept the Beatles' beat. He grew up in the Dingle, one of Liverpool's poorest districts, and spent long spells in hospital as a child. He played with Rory Storm and the Hurricanes before joining the Beatles in 1962. His steady, inventive drumming shaped their sound. He sang Yellow Submarine and With a Little Help from My Friends. After the band split he had solo hits and narrated Thomas the Tank Engine. He still tours with his All-Starr Band.
