Editor's Take:
Richard's story shows how royal duty can arrive unexpectedly. He trained as an architect and worked in a London practice before his life changed. The death of his elder brother William in 1972 ended that career and brought new obligations. Since then he has given decades of steady service rather than seeking attention. His patronages reflect his training, from architects' charities to heritage bodies and the Society of Antiquaries. He has also stood in for Elizabeth II at independence ceremonies and a papal inauguration. His reputation for a modest style suits that quiet role.
