Editor's Take:
Prince was a musical genius who wrote, played and produced almost everything himself. He grew up in Minneapolis, the son of a jazz pianist, and signed with Warner Bros at 19. He could play dozens of instruments. Purple Rain, the album and film of 1984, made him a superstar. His songs fused funk, rock, pop and soul, and he wrote hits for other artists too. In a fight with his label, he changed his name to an unpronounceable symbol. He died at his Paisley Park home in 2016 from an accidental fentanyl overdose, aged 57.
Prince Rogers Nelson (June 7, 1958 – April 21, 2016) was an American singer, songwriter, musician, dancer, actor, and filmmaker. Often credited as one of the greatest musicians of his generation, he pioneered the Minneapolis sound and was influential in the evolution of various other genres.
