Editor's Take:
Patrice Lumumba was the first prime minister of the independent Congo. A former postal clerk, he founded the Congolese National Movement and campaigned for a united country. At the independence ceremony in June 1960 he gave a fiery speech condemning Belgian colonial rule, in front of the Belgian king. Within weeks the army mutinied and the mineral-rich Katanga province broke away. He was deposed, arrested and handed over to his enemies. In January 1961 he was shot. Belgium later admitted moral responsibility.
