Editor's Take:
Khrushchev surprised the world by denouncing Joseph Stalin, the leader he had once served loyally. In a 'secret speech' in 1956, he criticised Stalin's purges and personality cult, opening a period known as the 'thaw'. His time in power saw the Soviet Union launch Sputnik and send Yuri Gagarin into space. He also brought the world to the brink of nuclear war during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962, before agreeing to remove missiles from Cuba. His impulsive style eventually led colleagues to remove him from power in 1964.
