Editor's Take:
Euler was perhaps the most productive mathematician who ever lived, publishing hundreds of papers and books across almost every area of the subject. He introduced much of the notation used today, including the letter e, the symbol i for the square root of minus one, and the use of π. His famous equation linking e, i, π, 1 and 0 is often called the most beautiful formula in mathematics. He solved the Seven Bridges of Königsberg puzzle, creating the field now called graph theory. His work underpins modern engineering, physics and computing.
