Editor's Take:
Copernicus quietly started one of the biggest shifts in human thinking by moving the Earth out of the centre of the universe. For more than a thousand years, scholars had accepted that the Sun, planets and stars all circled us. His careful calculations showed that the heavens made more sense if the Earth and other planets travelled around the Sun instead. He hesitated for decades before publishing, and his great book appeared only in the year he died. The change he set in motion, now called the Copernican Revolution, paved the way for Galileo, Kepler and Newton.
