Editor's Take:
Napoleon III was France's first elected president and its last emperor. As Napoleon Bonaparte's nephew, he twice tried to seize power and was jailed. He escaped and later won the 1848 presidential election by a landslide. In 1851 he staged a coup and soon made himself emperor. Under him, Baron Haussmann rebuilt Paris with wide boulevards and parks. France's economy and railways boomed. Defeat by Prussia in 1870 ended his reign, and he died in exile in England.
