Editor's Take:
Faraday is proof that genius does not need a privileged start. The son of a blacksmith, he left school early and educated himself while working as a bookbinder's apprentice, reading the books he bound. After attending lectures by the chemist Humphry Davy, he became his assistant at the Royal Institution and went on to outshine his mentor. His discovery of electromagnetic induction, generating electricity with a moving magnet, laid the foundations of electric motors and generators. He also started the Royal Institution Christmas Lectures for young people, a tradition that continues today.
