Editor's Take:
Meryl Streep is widely considered the finest screen actor of her generation, and her record backs that up. She has received more Academy Award nominations than any other actor, winning three, for Kramer vs. Kramer, Sophie's Choice and The Iron Lady. Her famous command of accents, from Polish to Danish to Margaret Thatcher's English, is only the surface of a deeper talent for disappearing into very different lives. She moves easily between heavyweight drama and lighter fare such as Mamma Mia! and The Devil Wears Prada. After nearly five decades on screen, she remains the benchmark that other actors are measured against.
