Editor's Take:
Meryem Uzerli became one of the most recognised actresses in the Middle East and the Balkans through a single role. As Hürrem, the slave who became Suleiman the Magnificent's wife, she played a woman of charm and cunning. Magnificent Century was a huge hit abroad, though some Turkish politicians criticised its portrayal of the sultan. She left the show in 2013, citing exhaustion. She has since worked in German and Turkish productions. Her fame shows the reach of Turkish drama.
