Editor's Take:
Mehmed II became one of history's great conquerors before he was 22. In 1453 he besieged Constantinople, the capital of the Byzantine Empire for over a thousand years. He used giant cannon and even dragged ships overland into the Golden Horn. When the city fell, he made it the new Ottoman capital. He rebuilt it and invited people of many faiths to settle there. He was a patron of scholars and artists. His conquests stretched from the Balkans to Anatolia. Turks call him Fatih, the Conqueror.
