Editor's Take:
Manmohan Singh was the quiet economist who opened India to the world. Born in a village now in Pakistan, he moved to India during the violence of Partition. He won scholarships to Cambridge and Oxford and became a respected economist and central bank governor. As finance minister in 1991, with India near bankruptcy, he launched sweeping reforms that freed the economy. Growth took off. He became prime minister in 2004, the first Sikh to hold the office, and served two terms.
