Did you know? Before finding fame as a solo artist, she played drums and sang for a short-lived New York rock band called the Breakfast Club.
Madonna rewrote the rules for how a pop star could control her own image and career. Arriving in New York with very little money, she rose to fame in the early 1980s and constantly reinvented her look, sound and persona. She used music videos and live shows to provoke debate about sexuality, religion and gender, often courting controversy on purpose. She is one of the best-selling music artists of all time and has had more UK number one singles than any other female solo artist. Her influence can be seen in almost every female pop star who followed.
