Editor's Take:
Ludwig Feuerbach argued that God is a projection of humanity's own best qualities. He studied theology, then philosophy under Hegel in Berlin. An anonymous early essay against personal immortality wrecked his academic career. In 1841 he published The Essence of Christianity. It claimed people worship idealised versions of themselves, and the book caused a sensation. His ideas influenced Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, though Marx criticised him too. He spent much of his life in rural seclusion. He died in Nuremberg in poverty.
