Editor's Take:
Lil Wayne spent the mid-2000s releasing music at an astonishing rate, through albums, guest verses and free mixtapes. That flood of work built his claim to be the best rapper alive. His style was playful and unpredictable, full of wordplay and odd turns of phrase. Tha Carter III turned him into a mainstream star and produced the hit Lollipop. He then used his Young Money label to bring new talent into the spotlight. Drake and Nicki Minaj both became huge stars under his wing.
