Editor's Take:
Klaus Meine matters because he gave Scorpions a recognisable voice and a lyrical identity across decades. Joining four years after the band formed, he became one of only two members, with Rudolf Schenker, present on every album. His writing credits include "Wind of Change", which he composed alone, and shared lyrics on "Still Loving You". The 1981 crisis, when his doctor advised him to consider another profession, shows how close the story came to ending. Surgery and therapy brought his voice back, and the band stayed together. His collaborations, from José Carreras to Avantasia, show a reach beyond the band.
