Editor's Take:
John Stuart Mill was one of the most important liberal thinkers of the 19th century. His father educated him intensely at home; he learned Greek at three. The strain led to a breakdown in his twenties, from which poetry helped him recover. His essay On Liberty argues that people should be free to do as they wish unless they harm others. He developed utilitarianism, the idea of the greatest happiness for the greatest number. As an MP he called for votes for women. He wrote The Subjection of Women with ideas shared with Harriet Taylor.
