Profile
Jeffrey Epstein (1953–2019)
The financier whose crimes exposed a web of powerful connections
Born in Brooklyn, Epstein began as a maths teacher at an elite Manhattan school before moving into banking and then running his own money-management firm. He built a reputation for courting the wealthy and well connected, from politicians and royalty to scientists and business leaders.
In 2008 he pleaded guilty in Florida to soliciting a minor and served a short, widely criticised sentence. In July 2019 he was arrested on federal sex-trafficking charges. A month later he was found dead in his New York jail cell, and the medical examiner ruled his death a suicide. The release of court records and investigation files has kept his case in the headlines ever since.
Did you know?He joined the investment bank Bear Stearns in 1976 and became a limited partner within four years.
