Editor's Take:

Buzz Aldrin was the second person to walk on the Moon, but his contribution to space exploration goes far beyond that moment. A combat pilot in the Korean War, he earned a doctorate from MIT in orbital rendezvous, the techniques spacecraft use to meet up in space, which proved vital to the Apollo programme. On Gemini 12 in 1966 he showed that astronauts could work effectively outside their spacecraft. After Apollo 11 he spoke openly about his struggles with depression and alcohol, helping to break the stigma around mental health. He has since been one of the most passionate campaigners for sending humans to Mars.
