Editor's Take:
Jean-Baptiste de Lamarck proposed one of the first full theories of evolution. He was a soldier before turning to botany, writing a celebrated flora of France. At the Paris natural history museum he took charge of the creatures nobody else wanted: insects, worms and shellfish. He coined the word "invertebrate" and helped popularise "biology". In 1809 he argued that species gradually change over time. He believed traits gained in life were passed on, like a giraffe's stretched neck. That mechanism proved wrong, but his big idea of change was right. He died blind and poor.
