Editor's Take:
Ivo Andrić wrote the great novels of Bosnia. He grew up in Višegrad, beside the old Ottoman bridge over the Drina. As a young man he was jailed for his links to the Young Bosnia movement. He later became a diplomat for Yugoslavia and was envoy in Berlin when war began. During the occupation he wrote quietly in Belgrade. The Bridge on the Drina follows four centuries of life around that bridge. In 1961 the Swedish Academy honoured him with the Nobel Prize.
