Editor's Take:
Boris Nemtsov was a physicist who became one of the faces of Russia's liberal reforms. He studied in Gorky, now Nizhny Novgorod, and entered politics through environmental campaigning. In 1991 Boris Yeltsin appointed him governor of the Nizhny Novgorod region, where he launched market reforms that drew international attention. In 1997 he became first deputy prime minister and was briefly seen as Yeltsin's likely successor. After Vladimir Putin came to power, Nemtsov moved into opposition. He wrote reports on corruption and led street protests against the Kremlin. In February 2015 he was shot dead on a bridge near the Kremlin. Five Chechen men were convicted, but who ordered the killing remains unknown.
