Editor's Take:
Heinrich Hertz proved that the invisible waves predicted by theory were real. James Clerk Maxwell's equations said light was an electromagnetic wave and that other such waves should exist. In 1887, in his laboratory at Karlsruhe, Hertz generated and detected radio waves with a spark-gap device. He showed they could be reflected and focused, just like light. Asked what use they might have, he reportedly said none. Within a decade, Marconi used them to send wireless messages. Hertz died at 36. The unit of frequency, the hertz, honours him.
Heinrich Rudolf Hertz ( hurts; German:; 22 February 1857 – 1 January 1894) was a German physicist who first conclusively proved the existence of the electromagnetic waves proposed by James Clerk Maxwell's equations of electromagnetism.
