Gustav Klimt made gold shimmer on canvas. He was the son of a Viennese gold engraver. He began by painting decorations for theatres and museums. In 1897 he co-founded the Vienna Secession, breaking with traditional art. His paintings for the University of Vienna caused an uproar. In his golden phase he created The Kiss and Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I. Both use real gold leaf. He also painted Austrian lakes and gardens. He died after a stroke during the 1918 flu pandemic.

Gustav Klimt (14 July 1862 – 6 February 1918) was an Austrian symbolist painter and a founding member of the Vienna Secession movement. His work helped define the Art Nouveau style in Europe.
