Editor's Take:
Gregor Mendel founded genetics in a monastery garden. Born to a peasant family in Silesia, he joined the Augustinian abbey in Brno to continue his education. Between 1856 and 1863 he grew some 28,000 pea plants. He counted how traits such as colour and height passed between generations. He found that inheritance follows simple mathematical rules. His work was ignored for 35 years. When it was rediscovered in 1900, it transformed biology.
