Editor's Take:
Leibniz had one of the most wide-ranging minds in history, working on mathematics, philosophy, law, history and engineering. He developed calculus independently of Isaac Newton, sparking one of the most bitter disputes over credit in the history of science. The notation he invented, including the elegant integral sign, is the one students still use today. He also designed a calculating machine that could multiply and divide. His famous claim that we live in 'the best of all possible worlds' was later mocked by Voltaire in Candide.
