Editor's Take:
Giacomo Leopardi is one of Italy's greatest poets. He grew up in Recanati, a small town in the Papal States, and taught himself Greek, Hebrew and several modern languages in his father's vast library. Years of intense study damaged his health. His Canti contain some of the most beautiful poems in Italian, including L'infinito. He wrote with great clarity about loneliness, nature's indifference and the longing for happiness. His prose Operette morali are dialogues full of irony. He died in Naples at 38.
