Editor's Take:
Franz Beckenbauer was known simply as Der Kaiser. He reinvented the role of the sweeper, striding out of defence with the ball to start attacks. Elegant and commanding, he won three European Cups in a row with Bayern Munich in the 1970s. He captained West Germany to the World Cup in 1974 and won the Ballon d'Or twice. He then played alongside Pelé at the New York Cosmos. As coach he won the World Cup again in 1990. He later led Germany's successful bid to host the 2006 tournament.
