Editor's Take:
Eugène Delacroix was the leading painter of French Romanticism. He believed colour and movement mattered more than perfect outline. His canvases are full of storms, battles and strong feeling. Liberty Leading the People, painted after the 1830 revolution, became a symbol of France itself. A journey to Morocco in 1832 filled his later work with light and vivid colour. Critics often set him against the cool classicism of Ingres. The Impressionists, and later Van Gogh, studied his brushwork closely. His journal is also one of the finest records of an artist's life.
