A lawyer from St Petersburg, he had worked with Putin for years before being chosen as his successor. As president he spoke about modernisation and fighting corruption, and he improved relations with the United States for a time. He then swapped roles with Putin, becoming prime minister. In later years he became known for increasingly hawkish public statements about the West.
