Editor's Take:
Few careers have been as unlikely as that of Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte. The son of a lawyer, he rose from private soldier to marshal in the armies of revolutionary France. In 1810 the Swedes, needing an heir, chose him in the hope of pleasing Napoleon. He soon turned against his old commander and joined the alliance that defeated him. In return Sweden gained Norway in a personal union. As king he governed cautiously and kept the country at peace. Every Swedish monarch since has been his descendant.
