Editor's Take:
Johnson's importance rests on a difficult job done well. Replacing a much-loved frontman within weeks of his death could have ended AC/DC, yet the band carried on and made Back in Black, one of the best-selling albums ever. His distinctive voice and strong Geordie accent gave the group a new character without erasing what came before. Away from the stage he built a second career around his love of cars, from racing to television. His return after the 2016 hearing problems showed how close the bond between band and singer remains.
