Editor's Take:
Babur founded the Mughal Empire in India. He descended from Timur on his father's side and from Genghis Khan on his mother's. He became ruler of Fergana in Central Asia at only 11. He spent years winning and losing Samarkand. He then made Kabul his base. In 1526, at Panipat, he defeated the Sultan of Delhi using cannons and cavalry. His dynasty went on to rule much of India for three centuries. He wrote a remarkably frank memoir, the Baburnama, full of notes on gardens, fruit and people.
