Editor's Take:
Modigliani developed one of the most recognisable styles in modern art during a short and chaotic career. He arrived in Paris as a well-read young Italian and soon joined the bohemian circles of Montmartre and Montparnasse. For several years he concentrated on sculpture, before poor health and the cost of stone pushed him back to painting. His portraits and nudes drew on African and ancient art. He sold little in his lifetime and drank heavily. Today his works are among the most expensive paintings ever sold at auction.
