Editor's Take:

Alexandre Millerand travelled further across French politics than almost anyone of his era. He began as a radical lawyer and socialist deputy for Paris, defending striking workers in court. In 1899 he became the first socialist anywhere in Europe to sit in a government, a move that split the French left. As minister of commerce he pushed through a shorter working day and better factory inspection. By the First World War he had drifted firmly to the right and served as minister of war. In 1920 he became prime minister and then president of the Republic. He tried to make the presidency more powerful, and the left-wing Cartel des Gauches forced him to resign in 1924.
