The 1st Chess Olympiad, organized by FIDE and comprising a team tournament, as well as several events designed to promote the game of chess, took place between 18 and 30 July, 1927 at the Westminster Central Hall, London, United Kingdom. It was officially known by its current name from 1952.

The Kyoto Animation arson attack occurred at Kyoto Animation's Studio 1 building in the Fushimi ward of Kyoto, Japan, on the morning of 18 July 2019. The arson killed 36 people, injured an additional 33 (including the suspect), and destroyed most of the materials and computers in Studio 1.
