Editor's Take:

Alphonse de Lamartine was a Romantic poet who briefly ran France. His Poetic Meditations of 1820 caused a sensation with their personal, melancholy tone. Poems such as The Lake mourned lost love and passing time. He moved into politics as a liberal and a fine speaker. In the revolution of February 1848, he became foreign minister and effectively led the new provisional government. He refused to adopt the red flag and kept the tricolour. He lost heavily in that year's presidential election and spent his later years in debt.

Alphonse Marie Louis de Prat de Lamartine (French:; 21 October 1790 – 28 February 1869) was a French author, poet, and statesman. Initially a moderate royalist, he became one of the leading critics of the July Monarchy of Louis-Philippe, aligning more with the Republican Left and Social Catholicism.
