Editor's Take:
Thomas Henry Huxley became known as "Darwin's Bulldog". He left school at ten and taught himself, then trained in medicine. As a naval surgeon on HMS Rattlesnake, he studied sea creatures and made his name. When On the Origin of Species appeared, he defended it fiercely in public. In 1860, at Oxford, he clashed famously with Bishop Samuel Wilberforce over evolution. He argued that humans share ancestry with apes. He coined the word "agnostic". He also championed science education for working people. His grandsons included the writer Aldous Huxley.
