Editor's Take:
Stefania Turkevych was a pioneer whose music was nearly erased by politics. She studied across central Europe and wrote symphonies, ballets, operas and songs. Many drew on Ukrainian folk themes. After the Second World War she left for the West and settled in England. Soviet authorities banned her work, so Ukrainians hardly knew her name. Interest has grown sharply since independence. Musicians in Ukraine and abroad are now recording and performing her scores. She is finally being heard as more than a footnote.
