Editor's Take:
Sergei Yesenin was the poet of the Russian village and one of the most loved writers in the language. He grew up in a peasant family in Konstantinovo, south-east of Moscow. His lyrical poems about birch trees, horses and the countryside made him famous young. He welcomed the 1917 revolution, then grew disillusioned as the old rural world vanished. He lived wildly, drank heavily and married three times. One of his wives was the American dancer Isadora Duncan. He died in a Leningrad hotel at 30. His final poem was reportedly written in his own blood.
