Editor's Take:
Little is known for certain about Saint Nicholas. His legend grew enormously. Stories of secret gifts, especially coins left for three poor sisters, made him a symbol of kindness. Sailors, children and whole cities claimed him as protector. Dutch settlers carried Sinterklaas to New York. Writers and artists there turned him into the Santa Claus of Christmas. His feast day, 6 December, is still celebrated across Europe. Few figures from late antiquity remain so present in everyday life.
