Editor's Take:
Robert Boyle helped turn alchemy into modern chemistry. He was born at Lismore Castle in Ireland, the fourteenth child of the wealthy Earl of Cork. With his assistant Robert Hooke he built an improved air pump to study the vacuum. He discovered that the pressure of a gas rises as its volume falls, now known as Boyle's law. In The Sceptical Chymist he argued for careful experiment over ancient theory. He was a founding member of the Royal Society. He was also deeply religious.
