Richard Dawkins made evolution a bestseller. Born in Kenya, he studied and taught zoology at Oxford. His book The Selfish Gene explained natural selection from the point of view of genes. In it he coined the word "meme" for ideas that spread like genes. The Blind Watchmaker showed how complexity can arise without a designer. Later he became the world's best-known atheist with The God Delusion. He remains admired and argued with in equal measure.
