Editor's Take:
Nadal turned clay-court tennis into his personal kingdom. His fourteen French Open titles are a record unlikely ever to be matched in any Grand Slam. He brought ferocious topspin, endless energy and a never-give-up attitude to every point. His rivalry with Roger Federer, and later Novak Djokovic, defined a golden era of men's tennis. He won with humility, which made him admired even by rivals.
