Editor's Take:
Rafael Correa reshaped Ecuador during a decade as president, from 2007 to 2017. An economist trained in Belgium and the United States, he came to power promising a 'citizens' revolution' against traditional political elites. Using oil revenues, his government invested heavily in roads, schools, hospitals and social programmes, reducing poverty. He also clashed with the press, defaulted on part of Ecuador's foreign debt and gave asylum to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange at Ecuador's London embassy. After leaving office he moved to Belgium and was later convicted in absentia on corruption charges, which he rejects as politically motivated.
