Editor's Take:
Neville Chamberlain is remembered above all for appeasement. Before that, he was a successful businessman and Lord Mayor of Birmingham. As health minister and chancellor he was an effective reformer of housing and pensions. He became prime minister in 1937. Hoping to avoid another world war, he tried to meet Hitler's demands. In 1938 he signed the Munich Agreement, giving Hitler part of Czechoslovakia, and promised "peace for our time". Within a year Britain was at war. He resigned in May 1940 and died months later.
